Zion National Park is one of America's crown jewels — a place of towering sandstone cliffs, narrow slot canyons, hanging gardens, and emerald pools that has captivated visitors for over a century. Located just 90 minutes from Brian Head, it's an essential day trip or multi-day adventure for any family staying at our Utah vacation cabins.

Getting to Zion from Brian Head

The drive from Brian Head to Zion's main entrance at Springdale takes about an hour and a half via I-15 South. During peak season from April through October, private vehicles aren't allowed on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive — instead, you'll park in Springdale and ride the free shuttle into the canyon. This actually makes the experience more enjoyable and stress-free for families, as kids love riding the shuttle.

Best Hikes for Families

Zion offers trails for every ability level. The Riverside Walk is a paved, mostly flat trail along the Virgin River that's perfect for strollers and young children. Weeping Rock is a short quarter-mile hike to a natural spring that drips from an overhanging cliff — kids think it's magical. The Lower Emerald Pool Trail is a one-mile round trip to a beautiful waterfall that most children can handle easily.

For Older Kids and Teens

Families with older children shouldn't miss Angels Landing — one of the most thrilling hikes in any national park. The final section follows a narrow spine with chain handholds and sheer drop-offs on both sides. It's not for everyone, but teenagers who complete it will feel an incredible sense of accomplishment. A permit is now required, so plan ahead.

Tips for Visiting with Kids

Start early to beat crowds and heat. Bring more water than you think you'll need — at least one liter per person per hour of hiking. Pack snacks, sunscreen, and hats. Rent water shoes in Springdale if you plan to wade in the Narrows. The Junior Ranger program gives kids an activity booklet and a badge upon completion, keeping them engaged and learning throughout the visit.

After the Park

The town of Springdale offers family-friendly restaurants, ice cream shops, and souvenir stores. After a big day at Zion, head back to your cozy Brian Head cabin — whether it's Cabin Birchwood, Cabin Aspen, or Sweet Mountain Retreat — and recharge for tomorrow's adventure. The contrast between Zion's desert canyon and Brian Head's mountain forests makes staying in the area feel like two vacations in one.
