Javelinas are stocky, pig-like animals native to Arizona deserts. Though they look intimidating, javelina encounters rarely result in problems when you understand their behavior and maintain respectful distance.
Javelina Identification
Weighing 30-60 pounds, javelinas have coarse salt-and-pepper fur and travel in groups called squadrons of 5-15 animals. They have a strong musky odor that marks territory.
Safety Guidelines
- Keep distance of at least 30 feet
- Never feed javelinas or leave food out
- Make noise while hiking to avoid surprising them
- Back away slowly if you encounter a group
- Don't corner an animal or position yourself between adults and young
